Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50-K Digital camera

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50-K Digital camera incorporates a high quality Leica DC lens with 12x optical zoom (equivalent to 35mm - 420mm on a 35mm film camera) and the MEGA O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabilizer) system in addition to an enhanced CCD capable of recording 10.1-megapixels, and a large 2.0" Free-angle LCD.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50-K Digital camera Overview
An 10.1-megapixel high resolution CCD has now joined the FZ series of 12x zoom lenses with MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer). The Extra Optical Zoom function further increases zooming power to 21.4x while suppressing image degradation.Blur compensation performance has evolved even further. Now you can capture clear, sharp photos in almost any shooting situations. LUMIX's popular MEGA O.I.S. suppresses the blurring caused by hand-shake, and Intelligent ISO Control minimizes blurring caused by subject movement when photographing children, animals, or other moving subjects. So you get less blurring and more beauty.Venus Engine III, the newly improved image processing LSI, inherits the conventional Venus Engine II's quick response and high-quality image output, yet dramatically reduces noise levels. This makes it possible to shoot at ISO 1600 with full resolution. In addition to advanced manual control with zoom ring and focus ring, the DMC-FZ50 is equipped with a new Function button that serves as a shortcut to quickly set frequently used settings. This helps you take photos exactly as you envision them. Also, thanks to the Custom Setting function, your frequent setting patterns can be memorized. The Free-angle LCD is now adjustable to 180 degrees both vertically and horizontally. This assists smooth shooting even in high and low-angle shooting positions. The mode dial makes it easy to retrieve the desired mode settings. A variety of Scene Mode settings optimize Scenery, Panning, and other photo techniques, giving you a choice of sixteen modes in all.The DMC-FZ50 can record beautiful WVGA (848 x 480-pixel) motion pictures and zooming while shooting. You will also discover many other ways to explore the fun and creativity of photography.

• F2.8 LEICA DC Vario-ELMARIT Lens
The FZ50 is equipped with a LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens that features 14
elements in 10 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses and an ED (extra-
low dispersion) lens that helps suppress the color bleeding that can
occur in telephoto shots. This advanced lens also boasts a 12x optical
zoom (35mm equivalent: 35 to 420mm) that pulls even distant objects into
your range. Add the FZ50's large, 1/1.8" diagonal 10.1-megapixel CCD and
you have extraordinary expressive power. The FZ50 also features Extended
Optical Zoom, which gives you up to 21.4x power by magnifying (with
minimal deterioration) the image using the center area of the high-
resolution CCD.
• Intelligent ISO Control Forestalls Motion Blur
The FZ50 features the world's first intelligent ISO control for ISO
sensitivity setting, which uses a circuit with Venus Engine III to
detect movement within the frame and helps you get blur-free shots by
automatically adjusting the ISO sensitivity (up to ISO 800) and shutter
speed according to how much the subject is moving.
• ISO 1600 minimizes Motion Blur
Thanks to an improved noise reduction system, the FZ50 can shoot at up
to ISO 1600 (manually adjustable) with full resolution. This lets you
use higher shutter speeds to capture children, pets or other moving
subjects with less motion blur. The FZ50's Scene mode also features a
High Sensitivity Mode that raises sensitivity to a level equivalent to
ISO 3200, letting you shoot at even faster shutter speeds to further
reduce motion blur.
• Intuitive Control with Manual Focus and Zoom Rings
Two rings on the FZ50 lens barrel give you complete manual control of
zooming and focusing. You get levels of speed and accuracy simply not
possible with button operation. You'll enjoy not only the precise
control these rings give you, but also the satisfying feel that only
manual operation offers.
• Accurate, Flexible Focusing both Auto and Manual
Use any of five auto focus modes: 1-point (normal/high-speed), 3-point
high-speed, 9-point, and spot. The manual focus ring lets you adjust the
focus from about 1 foot (0.3m) to infinity. The FZ50 also has Manual
Focus Assist, which makes it easier to focus by enlarging a part of the
image that you see in the viewfinder or LCD monitor. This all adds up to
quick, easy, accurate focusing.
• Two Command Dials let you make settings without Changing Your Grip
Two dials on the camera top make it easy to adjust the exposure setting
while holding the camera to your eye. In Manual mode, one dial adjusts
the aperture, the other adjusts the shutter speed. In Aperture Priority
and Shutter Priority modes, one sets the aperture or shutter speed, the
other sets the exposure compensation (-2 to +2 in 1/3 EV steps). Being
able to change these settings without changing your grip makes it easier
to catch spur-of-the-moment shots. The large right hand grip makes the
camera easy to hold, and these dials are exactly where you need them.
• Free-Angle 2.0" Diagonal LCD with Wider Adjustment Range
Change the angle of the LCD monitor any way you like. You can get a
comfortable look at the 2.0" diagonal, 207.000-pixel monitor even when
shooting over a crowd or taking a low-angle shot of a flower. We've also
increased the vertical adjustment range to 180 degrees for easier
shooting in portrait orientation.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50-K Digital camera user reviews
"I purchased Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50-K Digital camera in April 2007 after reading rave reviews from many amateur to professional camera sites and blogs. It has not disappointed me yet.
I bought the black version, which looks like a serious contender to all market leading SLRs, which is what it is intended for. This probably is the best bridging camera so far available.
Its Leica lens with manual zoom and focus ring gives it almost an SLR feel, without the hassle of the multiple lens changes required with an SLR. The fully manual override option is fantastic adding to the SLR functionality.
The menu is easy to use. The function option gives you some customisability too.
The Optical image stabilisation is an excellent tool, which you will realise is the most practical aspect in the camera soon enough; you cannot live without it.
The battery life is good, with 300-350 snaps taken easily with one charge. But I do have a back up battery just in case.
The lens hood is a useful accessory, especially in bright settings.
The rotating LCD panel is a beauty. I find this extremely useful when taking pictures of my children at odd angles, especially when they are fooling around on the floor. It is also quite handy at parties, when you want to take photos over other people's heads.
Indoor photography is no concern. Set it in intelligent ISO mode and the camera comes out with beautiful pictures. You would be the envy of your friends, when seen lugging this beauty. Even some digital SLRs during our latest party from work could not hold a candle to my Panny, in terms of the oohs and aahs it generated.
Now, there has been a lot of criticism about the noise it produces, especially at high ISO settings and its noise reduction engine and software. As an amateur who wants a bit of excitement in photography, this, in my opinion is no big deal at all. What I would suggest is use the lowest ISO (definitely no more than 400) and turn off noise reduction. Or for the uninitiated, just use Auto ISO or Intelligent ISO setting. You cannot go wrong.
Get a good filter to protect your lens - it is a must. I have a HOYA filter 55 mm. "

""A wonderful camera - The zoom is first rate, the stabilisation works wonders, and for those looking more for fun than professional photos the auto focus works, as does the macro. For those looking to get to know the manual controls, it is very simple - One hand gets focus and zoom on the lens, the other gets the apature and shutter speed control wheels. There is a slight noise even at a low ISO, but a quick fix in a program such as Photoshop will have you producing professional quality prints and pictures in no time at all. An excellent buy, and well worth the money - To buy an SLR and lens with the same capability and quality would cost well over £1000." "

"I have Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50-K Digital camera for about a year now. I really like it. It has helped me to move one step up in digital photograph since it can work fully manual. It might be a bit bulky but it is light and performs well in a great variety of shots. Consider that it does as well as many pre-professional cameras without needing to change the lenses or to pay for them. Panasonic realized that it had done too much of a great job so it moved to the interchangeable lenses which are better business, same results."

"I own the FZ30 but I am really tired of Philip Ryan's bias reviews. It is obvious he is not a professional photographer, since he thinks the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50-K Digital camera is large. I have yet to see a professional camera that fits in the palm of your hand Mr. Ryan. It is a perfect size and is extremely well balanced. The so called "noise" of Panasonics is simply blown out of proportion, they are no more noiser than any other camera with this size sensor. All I know is that Panasonic's keep winning awards, picture awards beating out Canon's, Nikon's, Olympus and Fuji's. That should tell you something. CNET has absolutely the worse bias reviewers I have seen on any site, they apparently know nothing of photography, or electronics. By Mr. Ryans own words, he is apparently a Point and Shoot photographer and the FZ50 and the FZ30 before it is not a Point and shoot camera. I am a professional photographer, and I a retired Electonics specialists, I can tell you now, that Panasonic has the best electronics of any brand camera, they may not be able to do a lot of high ISO low light above ISO 400 but most people do not shoot at those settings, and what noise you do get, can be corrected easily with Adobe CS2, or Noise ninja, and others, I will take the noise, that I can handle but soft pics like Fuji, or Canon superzoom's which also have purple fringing, those I will not accept. Mr. Ryan need to learn his trade better or quit doing reviews on things he apparently knowns very little about. The FZ50 is the best superzoom on the market today bar none. Buy it!"

"Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50-K Digital camera was bought for me as a present. I wanted to dSLR , however it wasn't with in our budget range. I recieved this last christmas and have loved it ever since. There are so many great features in this camera. I love all the different modes that is has. I use Auto a lot when i don't have time to play with the manual mode. It love how it has auto focus or manual focus. I love that i can use either the view finder or the flip out lcd screen. I could say lots of great things about this camera.. However there is one thing that i do find annoying. Its hard to get pictures to stay focused.. "
