Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 Digital Camera Overview

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 Digital Camera has 8 megapixels of resolution and a 12x optical zoom that provides extraordinary image-rendering performance and puts you in control over a wide variety of shooting techniques. The DC Vario-Elmarit lens combines a comfortably small size with superb image rendering. Furthermore, the MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer offsets unintentional hand movement to give you clear, sharp images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting at night.

The DMC-FZ30 is versatile while still easy to use. It stores images on Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMediaCards (MMC) which combine high storage capacity, rapid data transfer, and flexibility - all in a card about the size of a postage stamp. A Motion Image Recording mode with Audio records moving images with audio at a resolution of 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 pixels with no limit on segment length save for the available card capacity. The camera also includes a full complement of Photo Editing Software (ArcSoft PhotoBase, ArcSoft PhotoImpression, AcSoft Panorama Maker, Lumix Simple Viewer, and Photo Fun Studio)

• 8.0 Megapixel Resolution
The large, 1/1.8" diagonal 8-megapixel CCD Provides superb image quality and detail - sufficient to produce prints at sizes up to 20 x 30".

• Powerful 12x Optical Zoom Lens
The DMC-FZ30's LEICA DC Vario-Elmarit lens features 14 elements in 8 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses and an ED (extra-low dispersion) lens which helps to suppress the color bleeding that often occurs in telephoto shots, plus a 12x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 35 to 420mm). The Extended Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 19.1x power in 3-megapixel photos, and up to 15x power in 5-megapixel photos. Plus, the 12x optical zoom can be used together with the 4x digital zoom to produce a maximum of 48x zooming power.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 Digital Camera Features

• Accurate, Flexible Focusing
In addition to five auto focus modes (1-point, 3-point high-speed, 9-point, spot AF, and 1-point high-speed AF), the FZ30 features a ring that lets you manually adjust the focus from 0.98 feet (0.3m) to infinity. It also has Manual Focus Assist, a function that shows an enlarged image of the subject's center in the viewfinder. The One-Shot AF function in manual focus mode lets you focus automatically for a single shot by pressing the "FOCUS" button. The Continuous AF function keeps moving subjects in sharp focus, and the AF Assist Lamp helps in dim lighting. This all adds up to easy, accurate focusing.

• MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer Helps Eliminate Blurry Pictures
Jitter from shaky hands is one of the main reasons why cameras produce blurry images. We don't expect everyone to have hands of stone when taking pictures--that's why Lumix cameras help solve the problem of unsteady hands with advanced MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer technology. The DMC-FZ30K has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD.

• Manual and Advanced Functions
In addition to the variety of convenient automatic controls, the DMC-FZ30 has full manual controls for exposure, and white balance. Manual exposure capability gives you complete freedom for capturing images according to your preferences, including intentional overexposure or underexposure. The advanced histogram functions provide a graphic representation of the luminance level of the pixels composing an image for more precise exposure control for quality photos.

• Free-Angle 2.0" Diagonal High-Resolution LCD
Change the angle of the high-resolution 230,000-pixel 2.0" diagonal LCD monitor any way you like. You get the flexibility to catch a high-angle shot over a crowd, or a low-angle shot of flowers in a garden, all with a comfortable posture.

• MEGA BURST Consecutive Shooting
You can snap off consecutive shots at 3 frames per second with full resolution. In addition, the Unlimited Consecutive Shooting function lets you continue shooting until the memory card is full.

• Instant Close-ups with a Single Switch
Regardless of the Mode Dial setting, you can take macro shots instantly by flicking the switch on the side of the lens to the AF Macro setting. This lets you get as close as 0.16 feet (5cm) from your subject (at the maximum wide-angle setting).

• Motion Image Recording with Audio
Using the QuickTime Motion JPEG format, the Lumix DMC-FZ30 can record moving images with audio at a resolution of 320 x 240 or 640 x 480 pixels and at frame rates of 10 fps or 30 fps. The maximum time for each recorded segment depends solely on the available SD card capacity.

• Bundled Photo Editing Software
The photo editing software included with the Lumix DMC-FZ30 camera lets you turn your home computer into a virtual photo studio:

              o Lumix Simple Viewer
View and save JPEG, TIFF, and RAW files quickly and easily on your computer.
              o Photo Fun Studio
Template based image editor for quick and simple image adjustments.
              o ArcSoft PhotoBase
Transfer images from an SD Memory Card to a PC and display them in a list
              o ArcSoft PhotoImpression
Adjust colors and process images to create calendars, cards, etc.
              o ArcSoft Panorama Maker
Merge separate photos to create a single panoramic image.

• Print Directly From Your Camera
You can send images directly to print, without the need of a PC, when using PictBridge compatible printers.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 Digital Camera user reviews

"I have had Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 Digital Camera for 2 weeks and have taken around 200 pictures in all kinds of different light setting and am very pleased with it! It fit you hand perfectly, it's very easy to use, the viewfinder is great for a digital and the new screen ...is very bright and clear! I couldn't be happier with it."

" I am a camera enthusiast and I have a Panasonic FZ20 which I simply love. I do have some issues with it - no, not issues, possible improvements - which seem to be nailed down quite nicely in the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 Digital Camera. The swivelling screen was something I kind of envied in other cameras, the zoom ring would really be more confortable and the trigger is now placed perfectly, where you would naturally go with your finger. Plus, you get a higher density screen and 3 extra megapixels compared to the FZ20!!! Just hope they don't charge proportionally to everything it has. Seems like THE CAMERA to beat."

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 Digital Camera is a sizable beast: At 1 pound, 8 ounces and just over 5 inches long, it’s bigger and heavier than many other advanced cameras I looked at. It feels more like an SLR than an all-in-one camera, and the SLR styling carries over to the controls, which include both a zoom ring and a focus ring on the lens—a combination I haven’t seen on this type of camera before."

"I couldn't afford the SLR I really wanted, but just couldn't settle. I have an active 18 month old, so speed in taking pictures was a HUGE deal to me. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 Digital Camera captures the image quickly so you don't lose the moment. I also love the manual focus. I have never been happy with auto focus (although the one on this camera works surprisingly well) since it rarely works on close-up pictures. The flash is surprisingly bright and strong yet doesn't wash out the picture. The rotating screen is large and bright (great if you're shooting outdoors) and I'm surprised at how much I like being able to protect the screen by turning it in toward the body. Lots of button and knobs and features to keep an amateur happy and occupied! "
